I think people at concerts these days have very little etiquette. Had to leave one early this week because the crowd wouldn’t stop talking, it was horrible, really ruined the experience. Sick of people who are just there to be seen!
OMG I was at a Chelsea Cutler show recently and the guys standing by us wouldn't SHUT UP! I thought I was being a cranky old lady by being annoyed by it, but like, we're here to listen to this talented person play their music and share their stories, not for you to catch up with your friends. Thank you for validating my feelings on this!
Oh I absolutely think that you could have told them to be quiet. I was at a jazz gig with my father in law and he was savagely telling people to shut up. It was amazing.
Whenever I see this sort of behaviour, it always reminds me of this piece Wil Wheaton wrote WAY back about fans and how creepy it was to be on the receiving end of that behaviour. (https://wilwheaton.net/2011/07/if-you-cut-me-i-will-bleed/). And let's face it - that was 12+ years ago. The behaviour is getting worse if anything! Pretty scary for those on the receiving end.
Beautifully written Luce! I really feel for artists when it comes to this aspect of their lives, to be able to make your living creating art and doing the thing you love but having to give up your privacy, to have every word you say picked apart in case you said something that could be construed as offensive, to have your character and morals questioned, to have your life interrupted I just hate that they have to deal with this. I get why Taylor didn't address the Matty situation, I get why she changed the lyric in better than revenge without saying a word about it, or why she removed the scale scene in the anti hero music video silently.
Artists are humans too and they should be treated like it

I remember at one point thinking I was a bad fan for not waiting around for hours hunting down my fave musicians, but it just made no sense to me. I guess as a kid with a brain that hasn’t fully formed yet you just want that prized photograph that idk proves something to your friends? Maybe a primal thing of ‘accept me cause I’m cool’. Dunno. Gives a lot to think about
yes!!! it’s crazy that when ur young being a “bad fan” is considered leaving them alone, but when ur older u realise being a bad fan is when u NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE
you saw the infamous Wellington night? i’m pretty sure i was out in town during it (ohhh the clubbing days) haha doja cat is on a weird path - her bf is hella problematic and alienated himself from a community i was part of with my friends (he fucked around and found out really!)
It can be really hard to be a fan sometimes too especially for artists that you may have loved for a long time and finally being old enough to go and also afford these concerts 😂 little things add up over time and it’s amazing how many artists haven’t shut their doors to their art bc of the craziness
