another aspect in terms of rewatching is knowing a series has a decent amount of episodes/seasons, and hopefully that it was wrapped up in a satisfying way and not abruptly canceled.
older shows that still had 22-24 episode seasons, and where you know the exact number of seasons and when you're on the series finale (or go in already knowing the finale is notoriously bad, hellow HIMYM), can be easier to get invested in than 8 episodes of a new show, reboot or original, that seems highly likely to get canceled before the first season jitters are worked out.
Absolutely! There is less chance of trust issues with the good old 22-24 episode arcs. You also knew which eps were filler, which eps were big plot moments. The knowing what’s coming up is part of the comfort. I appreciate your thinking! ✨💥
The Blind Boy podcast touched on this too in his Barbie episode and as a semi-professional nostalgia expert, it’s literally one of my favourite topics.
I have found myself digging into my own childhood and teen years for familiarity - Assumingly because of all of the above reasons you outlined but also because that’s the last time I probably had any hope or aspirations for the future 😂
I am also very interested to see how we look back on this time because like you say, there is no originality - partly because no one is really *creating*
Maybe it’s because there really are no original ideas left, and maybe it’s also because reused ideas are the most marketable but maybe it’s also because we’re too pre-occupied with the overwhelm of technology etc to actually make space in our lives for exploring creativity and actually DOING THE THINGS that gave us all the great music and shows of the past.
Thank you SO much for reading, and for this gorgeously considered reply. I agree! The role capitalism and consumerism plays in this is so much more than we will likely ever know / realise. Part of me wonders if it will just be a manufacturing of current Marvel movies and merch as ‘vintage’ 😂.
The point you make about digging into your childhood years for familiarity and hope, that is so real for me too. I have developed this habit where I regularly google the family home where I lived until I was 15. Why? Because it was the last true space I felt safe, happy, unaffected by the world, or by shitty family things, and yes I was young and naive but I go back and google that house likely for the same reason you are digging into your own childhood. It’s going back to a time before life punched us in the face and said ‘hey welcome this sucks’ to us as real world adults 😂
Thank you again for reading. Please stay in touch! I love chatting about these things in more detail with folks who feel similar 🙏🏻✨
The reason I keep gravitating towards old shows is primarily because everything that is being made now is just a remake and it's tiring. I suppose I'm just perpetuating the cycle, but if it's a choice between yet another revival series of a show I barely cared about 20 years ago and a movie that was absolutely iconic from that same time, I'm going to pick the thing I know is good.
Literally the only reboot I ever cared about is the Lizzie McGuire one that I guess is never happening now, I'm still crying about it lol.

When Y2K was approaching, I was horrified but I never happened. Now I sometimes pray it will, and soon.
God, same! Who would have thought, 25 years later we’d be thinking that?? Wild. Thank you for reading 💖🫶🏻
