As a long time fan of Her’s and a person whose mum is battling chronic conditions including an autoimmune disease, this REALLY struck a chord. But aside from that, this perfectly articulates what I think a lot of us are coming to be aware of— I see a lot of talk about digital footprints in terms of career prospects etc, but this is the first commentary I’ve read that has such a refreshing and human take. Gorgeously written too. Thinking of Kristin and you, Emma. May she rest in peace🤍
I‘m so sorry for your loss. Death can be so cruel, especially when it hits young people. It’s so heartbreaking when people are taken from this world who still had so much more life ahead of them. It’s like they were robbed of their time.
This was really beautifully written, and a touching reflection on your sister and your experience of grieving through music. Music truly is a healing balm. It’s whatever you want it to be. You can use it (either listening or playing/creating it) in any stage of life for any feeling/experience and somehow it resonates with others with completely different life experiences. It’s a cool connectedness of humanity that music is able to provide. Music has been life-saving to me personally, and something so simple and quick as the opening note of a song is all it takes sometimes to transport me back to a single point in time from my memories. I think that is really powerful. I think the same could be said for other forms of creative expression (writing, videos/film/tv, photography, art, etc), and they are all beautiful legacies given by their creators, to resonate with people in different personal ways but also bring them together by their mutual appreciation of it. I’m not sure what my point was with this rambling comment, but I guess I just wanted to agree with you about the power of all forms of art/media in changing lives and also beautifully preserving the moment in time that they were created or the moment/memory in time they evoke in the audience/consumer/listener/reader. Thank you for this food for thought and reflection this morning 💜
Megan, I completely agree with you! Music and art, in all its forms, keeps us going and forges instant community (case in point! ✨). Beautiful reflection 💜
This is so beautifully written, Emma. Thank you for sharing these thoughts, as always your creativity and way of seeing the world inspires me. So much love.
Emma, this is so deeply poignant and heartbreakingly true. To pass from this world in this day means that an online presence remains, and it can be disturbing and bracing as well as serving to remind us of the beauty and pain that remains. You've given me so much to think about, and more tissues to throw away. Big hugs to you!
I have never heard of Her's, but have been listening to them all day and feeling their loss deeply. Thanks for sharing their story, the story of your amazing-sounding sister, and bringing this music into my life.
